Taking care of your skin during the winter

I live in an area that is very cold and dry during the winter time.  My skin gets dry and my lips become chapped.  I’m sure many of you might face similar problems where your skin becomes cracked, dry, and even irritated because of these harsh temperatures.  Luckily there are solution to help prevent and restore our skin to its natural beauty.  Here are some tips to refresh your skin this winter:

  1. Use a better moisturizer.  This one seems pretty basic but it can make a difference for you.  It is best to use a moisturizer that is oil based, rather than water based.  The oil helps to create protective layer for your skin.  There are a lot of products that you can try and use.  I suggest finding a product that fits your needs best.  A word of caution.  Make sure the moisturizer you use is non-clogging.
  2. 2. Use sunscreen.  Sunscreen can help prevent sunburns from the winter sun.  This sounds a little strange, but when I went camping and hiking in the snow in Oregon, I would put on sunscreen because the ground acted as a giant mirror reflecting the UV rays towards my face.  Another thing to remember is that the higher the elevation you are, the greater the risk there is of UV radiation.
  3. Talk to a specialist.  One of the best things that you can do for yourself is talk to a specialist.  Generic store brands might not always be the best product for you to use.  Everyone’s skin is different and will react differently.  It is good to a dermatologist or esthetician.  They can analyze your skin type and suggest products that will better meet your skin needs.
