Statistics in the 2015 Cosmetic Surgery Industry

Statistics play a big role in helping any business, industry, or market to analyze data and key trends, draw conclusions, and answer questions about the market.  This past week, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons published data of the previous year in the cosmetics field.

The cosmetic industry is continuing to grow.  In PSA Inc.’s last blog we discussed how men are now joining the cosmetic industry.  Last year alone, there were more than 15.9 million surgical procedures that took place.  All of these procedures took place in the US.  Some of the more popular procedures over the past 15 years have been breast augmentations and facial procedures.

Some other popular surgeries include the buttocks, lower body, and upper arms.  The more procedures that are available give people more options in what they want to do to change their body.  These procedures and others have become more available as the technology has become more developed and then making it more affordable for people to get these treatments done.

The top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures included breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery and tummy tuck.  These 5 surgeries consisted of 1.7 million procedures that were done in 2015

The top 5 non-invasive procedures included Botulinum Toxin type A, soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion.  These procedures accounted for 14.2 million procedures done.  The skin care industry continues to grow.  Procedures that were done grew by 2% since 2014.

What does this mean?

Cosmetic surgeries are popular today.  This growth could lead to more procedures being done in the future and maybe at a lower cost.  Looking at these procedures show what people give and pay attention to on their own bodies.  Some women want bigger breasts, others want a slimmer nose, and a flat tummy.  These procedures help to give us the youthful appearance that we once had and the opportunity to feel good or better about ourselves.  We are two months in to 2016 and there is still a lot to be said about what this year will hold for the cosmetic surgery industry.

Men + Botox = “Brotox”

Women have been the primary target for Botox, anti-aging products, and most skin treatments.  There has always been a concern among women to protect their youthful appearance and reduce any lines or wrinkles as they age.  Men are now catching on to the idea of using Botox and other skin care treatments to renew their look and take care of some aging that occurs.

Getting any work done is nothing to be ashamed of.  People do it for a variety of reasons.  These reasons may be because of getting rid of wrinkles, .  I think that women might feel more pressure to get such treatments done because of the influence that media has on people.  I recently learned a new term called metro sexuality.  This means that men take more of an urban look in their appearance by the way the dress and groom themselves.  They are more concerned than other males about beauty treatments and fashionable clothes.

Maybe I’m out of the loop or not paying attention to what men are doing, but I have noticed that they have recently taken a big interest in their overall appearance.  Men use to carry themselves by the way they dressed.  Now men are taking their look to a new level by spending more time with the way their hair is cut and now enhancing certain facial features and eliminating others.

The Botox Cosmetic site has pages of information dedicated to men and Botox procedures, and the results that other men have had.  I think opening up male Botox or “Brotox” is a good idea as it helps to break down boundaries that have been established between male and female procedures.  These stigmas have come about as time has progressed since men and women have been put into certain classes and stereotypes.

If any men are looking to receive some kind of treatment, they should talk to a doctor who has experience working with male patients in the past.  Treatments aren’t always the same between men and women.  The results will vary between the two genders and it’s a good idea to work with a doctor who has done work on men before.

How young is too young to start using Botox and fillers?

Wrinkles are always a topic of discussion when talking about beauty products and skin care treatments.  Many women in their 40’s, 50’s, and 60 try to rejuvenate their face by getting rid of the wrinkles.  Some doctors say that by taking care of these wrinkles late in life can fix the problem but not as well if people were to begin getting simple injections earlier.  The idea is to prevent the use of these muscles by using Botox and other injections before these muscles cause permanent wrinkles.

I like the idea of preventing wrinkles before they start.  Many women and some men want to prolong their youthful appearance and by the time they are in their 40’s and 50’s it can be too late.  I don’t think it is a good idea for teens to be getting Botox since they are so young.  It could be a good idea for someone to start getting some small work done if they are in their early 20’s and 30’s.  This is a topic that can be very controversial for many people and doctors.  My advice for anyone who is looking to use Botox or fillers is to consult with an esthetician or a dermatologist.  They can provide you with the information that you need to make a decision about when to start and if you should ever start.

What are UV rays doing to your skin?

As people age, they want to do things to prolong or rejuvenate the beauty they had in their youth.  People see the wrinkles, lines, age spots, and other skin blemishes as physical imparities that take away from their natural beauty.  Our skin ages as we get older.  It is also affected by our surroundings.  Doing such things as being in the sun for too long, dry air, smoking, stress, and other factors also causes our skin to age.  Our skin becomes dry, irritated, and itchy because of these issues and also from health problems that we might have.

Skin care companies want to solve these problems that are faced by people every day.  By focusing on the harm that is causing the problems, skin care companies hope to solve some of the major issues.  Skin care companies want to boost the natural defense system of the skin against pollutants.  Back in the day, UV rays used to be a factor facing people and skin care companies.  Companies included UV filters into products to absorb or reflect the UV light that can cause damage to the skin.  Anti-aging creams are the big factors for skin care companies these days.  Many people see that anti-pollution creams and anti-aging creams are similar.

Anti-aging creams made up 28% of all skin care products that were sold back in 2013.  Companies are trying to push these new products out to consumers.  New studies are being done to show that pollutants are causing problems to the skin of people.  The article that I read goes on to explain the ad campaigns that many companies have started to bring awareness to this issue.

I found this article to be very interesting and I would like to do find out more about the studies that are being done and if any progress has been made in proving that such pollutants are causing such problems to occur in people.

Latisse. Make your lashes longer and more thick

The topic of the blog this time is about a product called Latisse and is used by Plastic Surgery Aesthetics Inc.  Latisse is meant to provide you with longer lashes.  Women like to have long lashes because it is a symbol of beauty.  Other reasons include; looking more attractive, creates a dramatic effect, more option when applying makeup, and even help with self-esteem.  Women will use fake eyelashes, mascara, and curling to achieve this look of beauty for themselves.

Latisse was created to help women with have better eyelash growth.  This is an FDA approved drug.  Latisse is not a one-time thing to fix your problems.  You apply Latisse each night before you go to bed.  Progress in thicker and longer lashes is most noticeable after 16 weeks of use.  It is also recommended to continue using it after you have reached your goal of longer lashes.

Latisse is a safe product to use on your eyes.  It is important to note that it is a prescription drug.  You need to talk to your eye doctor to make sure that you can use the product without having any adverse side effects.  I tried to find some negative effects from using Latisse.  The only thing that I came across was that it can cause the skin of the applied area on the skin to be darkened and even the color of your eyes darkening.  Another side effect of Latisse is dry eyes.  That can happen if the product gets in your eyes.

For those that want to have longer and thicker lashes, you should take the time to consult with your eye doctor, cosmetologist, dermatologist, or esthetician for more information.  From what I have found, it is a product that can help women achieve their beauty goals.  It is safe to use and the results do happen.

Do you know what’s in your skin care products?

Every day is a learning experience for me with my skin care blog.  I am new to blogging and the skin care industry.  One of the topics I came across while reading some articles was the use of all natural skin care products versus synthetic products.  I don’t know if it is a new trend in skin care or something that has always been around.

One of the first things that I came across was on biofreshskincare.ie.  In the 8-minute video I watched, it describes the toxic chemicals that are used by large companies in their products.  Businesses like to use packaging techniques like making the box green, or using flashy words like all-natural, herbal, or organic on their labels.  These are marketing strategies to get people to buy their products.  They know people will buy their product if it lists such words that has to deal with organic since that is what consumers are looking for.  Another website I checked out was safecosmetics.org.  If you have some time, visit this website as it provides you with a lot of detail about low toxicity in products, safe chemicals, and it even provides safe cosmetics tips.

Not all chemicals are bad.  It is important that we know what we are putting into our bodies because these toxic chemicals can have adverse effects on our body.  Safecosmetics.org even has a list of chemicals for us that can harm our bodies.  The food we eat and the air we breathe, and the water we drink is filled with toxic chemicals.  All this information kind be scary since there is so much happening to our bodies that we can’t see.  I think it is important to be informed of these chemicals so we can do our best to minimize the damage that can happen.

The last thing that I want to talk about are the all-natural products that we can use.  One thing that you can do is to make sure that the products that you use and buy are organic.  Know where the product and the ingredients in the product came from.  Biofreshskincare gives a list of all natural skin care.  This list includes; biodegradable ingredients, no artificial colors or preservatives, earth friendly formulas, and cruelty free.

Taking care of your skin during the winter

I live in an area that is very cold and dry during the winter time.  My skin gets dry and my lips become chapped.  I’m sure many of you might face similar problems where your skin becomes cracked, dry, and even irritated because of these harsh temperatures.  Luckily there are solution to help prevent and restore our skin to its natural beauty.  Here are some tips to refresh your skin this winter:

  1. Use a better moisturizer.  This one seems pretty basic but it can make a difference for you.  It is best to use a moisturizer that is oil based, rather than water based.  The oil helps to create protective layer for your skin.  There are a lot of products that you can try and use.  I suggest finding a product that fits your needs best.  A word of caution.  Make sure the moisturizer you use is non-clogging.
  2. 2. Use sunscreen.  Sunscreen can help prevent sunburns from the winter sun.  This sounds a little strange, but when I went camping and hiking in the snow in Oregon, I would put on sunscreen because the ground acted as a giant mirror reflecting the UV rays towards my face.  Another thing to remember is that the higher the elevation you are, the greater the risk there is of UV radiation.
  3. Talk to a specialist.  One of the best things that you can do for yourself is talk to a specialist.  Generic store brands might not always be the best product for you to use.  Everyone’s skin is different and will react differently.  It is good to a dermatologist or esthetician.  They can analyze your skin type and suggest products that will better meet your skin needs.
